BOISE, Idaho -- State
Democratic Party Chairman Richard Stallings
issued the following remarks regarding
Republican Sen. Larry Craig's decision to break
his word and continue to hold his seat in the
United States Senate:
"Well, the drama
continues," Stallings said Friday. "Larry
Craig's selfish decision to remain in office
means that for the next 15 months, he and Idaho
will continue to be fodder for late-night
comedians. The embarrassment is going to be
ongoing for our state and our
people."
However, Stallings said Craig's move will help Idaho Democrats across the board, especially with an open Senate seat.
"Gov. Butch Otter will not replace Craig with
someone like Lt. Gov. Jim Risch, who would have
had a head start on the 2008 election. That
means the Republicans primary will be
divisive," Stallings said.
"It also will
have an energizing effect on our party's
candidates. Larry LaRocco has gotten a running
start at his campaign for the senate seat. Our
members are highly motivated by these events
and we are looking forward to giving Idaho a
fresh start in 2008."
