BOISE, Idaho –  The jig’s up. It’s well past time for Representative Bill Sali to stop being fiscally reckless. Sali should finally pay off his campaign debt before the end of the second fiscal quarter.

Sali’s 2006 campaign ended nearly 20 months ago, but Sali still owes various individuals and companies more than $125,000. [FEC] Sali’s owed so much for so long that even his political allies have had enough. Sali’s longtime friend, Lou Esposito, is now working for Sali on a cash-only, pay as you go basis. [Spokane Spokesman-Review, 5/01/08; Roll Call, 5/07/08]. Sali’s arrangement with Esposito is particularly noteworthy because Sali voted against having the federal government run on a similar pay as it goes basis. [HRES 6, Vote #9, 1/05/07]

“Why should Idaho taxpayers trust Representative Bill Sali with their hard-earned money if he won’t even pay down his campaign debt,” asked Idaho Democratic Party Communications Director Chuck Oxley. “While Sali’s campaign maintains more than $125,000 in debt, Sali continues to spend, spend, spend. Sali’s big-spending way is exactly the type of fiscally reckless policy that has hurt our economy and our families. Isn’t it time that Idaho’s first congressional district had a Member of Congress who both preached and practiced Idaho’s fiscally conservative values?”
